- Book an approved course. This is the step with the real waiting time — popular weekend slots fill well ahead, and it is what actually sets your timeline. Booking early is the single biggest thing you control.
- Complete the course. Classroom plus hands-on riding, typically across a weekend. Providers supply the motorcycle.
- Collect your MSB-8 / MSB-8R certificate. Do not lose it — it is the document that does the work.

Two practical notes. Certificates do not last forever, so leave a sensible gap between finishing the course and applying rather than treating it as an open-ended voucher. And the DPS visit is appointment-driven — that appointment, not the paperwork, is usually the second bottleneck.
Can you ride a motorcycle with a car licence in Texas?
